Tall, good-looking, and with a
laugh that made others laugh with him, Tyler Ugolyn
led by example and turned his talent for sports into a
vehicle to help others.
Although Tyler was co-captain of his varsity
basketball team and nominated to the McDonald's High
School All-American team after being ranked as one of
the nation's top high school seniors in the country,
he took his studies very seriously. He was an honor
student at Ridgefield High School and a member of the
National Honor Society. He was recruited to play
Division I basketball and earned his way to Columbia
College as both an athlete and scholar.
An economics major at Columbia, where he graduated
in May 2001, Tyler continued his involvement both on
and off the court. For his fraternity, Kappa Delta Rho,
he served as vice president, secretary and Webmaster.
A devout Catholic who was a Eucharistic Minister,
Tyler became one of the founding members of Columbia
Catholic Athletes. He initiated and ran an inner-city
youth basketball league for Harlem children and was
active in the annual Columbia Outreach program and was
a soup kitchen volunteer in Harlem.
After graduation, Ty joined Fred Alger Management
as a research associate. He intended to go on for his
MBA and receive his CFA, become a portfolio manager
and eventually start his own investment management
firm.
Tyler's college home webpage listed his favorite
quote from his grandmother: "Yesterday was history,
tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift from God."
